Harmony Partners With Kidney Cancer Association For August “Harmony Helps” Fundraiser
When Jamie runs – people take notice. It may be the orange racing singlet, or perhaps the sparkly orange headband. Certainly the orange tulle tutu stands out and even her racing flats have an orange ribbon woven into the laces. And while the costume provides opportunities for Jamie to bring awareness to the work of the Kidney Cancer Association, it is also a constant reminder that she is running 26.2 miles in honor of the 26 years she had with her dad.
I met Jamie six years ago, only days after her dad’s funeral. She came to Harmony as respite from the stress and sadness of losing a parent. She wanted to take time – if only for an hour a week – to focus on herself. Week after week she came to class and her body became stronger, she stopped keeping her Blackberry by her side during class (shock and awe!) and we both relished the opportunity to grab a Starbucks coffee after class, often talking long into the evening about our families, our work and our goals.
When she shared that she was going to train for the Chicago Marathon to benefit other families facing this disease and live out her dad’s motto, “It’s nice to be nice” – I knew that I could provide the moral support and physical cross-training support she needed to get through the race.
Now, countless marathons later, Jamie still comes to Harmony to make sure her core is strong, she still gives me a dirty look each time I make her roll out her IT band on the foam roller (you know it is always tight, Jamie), and every year I am out on the race course cheering her on and yelling “Run like the wind!” – just as her dad always did.
Because “It’s nice to be nice,” I hope you will put on your favorite orange workout gear and join me at 1962 N. Bissell on Sunday, August 17 at noon for a class to benefit the research and support services that the Kidney Cancer Association (KCA) provides. Bring friends, family and loved ones. No experience necessary. We will be teaching an Open Level Pilates Mat class and our teachers are such rock stars that they can program class to be accessible for newbies and challenging for the more experienced. Spots are limited, so reserve yours today by calling 773.296.0263. There is no charge for class. We are just asking for a $20 suggested donation at the door – with all proceeds going toward KCA.
Can’t make class but still want to help? Click here to donate online and be sure to come back and see who Harmony Helps will partner with next month!
