Client Question: During the summer months I travel more with my family. Do you have some tips & exercises I can do on the road?
Answer: Pilates matwork is perfect for you! All you need is some space and a little padding beneath you. You can even use a Theraband or light weights to add a layer to many of the mat exercises.
The 100’s are, of course, a great way to start getting your blood pumping and get you centered. You may also choose to start with some standing roll downs. The Roll Up is a wonderful way to increase your spine flexibility and to build your core strength. Challenge your core stability even further with the Single and Double Leg Stretch; and try the Saw to open up your back and shoulders and rotate your spine. Side lying leg work is a great challenge for the thighs and glutes on its own, or with a Theraband tied around your thighs for added challenge. And finally, for some great overall body strengthening, finish with plank, side plank and perhaps a few push-ups if you’re feeling fancy! Then stretch it all out with Spine Stretch Forward, or some more standing roll downs.
How did you discover Pilates, and how did it change your life?
I was introduced to Pilates in my college ballet classes, but re-discovered it after a really bad day at my office job. That’s when I decided to become an instructor. The main way Pilates has changed my life is that I look back at how my body felt everyday before Pilates and how I feel now, and now I just need Pilates in my life.
What is your favorite Pilates exercise, and why?
I have tight hip flexors and a tight low back, so hip rolls, short spine on the reformer and hip work (feet in straps) on the reformer are my usual favorites. I always do those exercises if I have only a few minutes to spare.
